Hassan II Bridge (Morocco)
The Hassan II Bridge connects the cities of Rabat – Morocco's capital – and Salé, crossing the Bouregreg river.
The design of the bridge harmonises with the historic landscape, complementing Rabat’s 12th-century Hassan II Tower, which dominates the skyline of the surrounding plain. Architect Marc Mimram received the 2013 Aga Khan Award for the design of the bridge.
With a total length of 1.2 km, a width of 46 m, and a height of 12.8 m, the Moulay al-Hassan bridge consists of three sections: one comprises the tramway platform as well as pedestrian and bicycle paths; the other two are used for motorised traffic.
Construction began in 2008, and was finished in 2010. HeidelbergCement’s subsidiary Ciments du Maroc supplied 28,000 m3 of ready-mixed concrete for the bridge project.
