Troja Bridge (Czechia)
One of the flattest arches in the world spans the Vltava river
In many respects, the Troja Bridge crossing the Vltava river in Prague’s Troja city district deserves to be called "unique".
Its span makes it one of the biggest bridges in Czechia, while the rise of its arch and the structure without supporting pillars in the river are unique on a global scale. High-performance self-compacting concrete was used for its construction with strength of over 100 Megapascals (MPa), and the concrete was cooled with liquid nitrogen – a brand-new innovation.
The 262-metre-long Troja Bridge is part of the Prague City Ring. It is a very elegant structure without any supports in the river. At 20 metres in height, the bridge has one of the flattest arches in the world. The bridge has a four-lane road, tram tracks, and paths for pedestrians and cyclists on both sides.
The supporting structure of the main span consists of a solid, pre-stressed steel-concrete arch with a bottom bridge deck. The bridge has a deep foundation, with its supports and pillars based on drilled piles fixed into the bedrock. All concrete structures have exceptional technical properties and lend the bridge a breathtaking visual quality.
Ready-mixed concrete was supplied by TBG Metrostav, a joint venture of Heidelberg Materials.
