Runway Extension Varna (Bulgaria)

Enhanced runway with innovative micronized limestone

Varna International Airport is the third-largest airport in Bulgaria.

The extension project included widening of safety strips along the asphalt coated runway by 5 m and increasing the total width of the runway to 60 m. It also included construction of a new drainage system and installation of runway signal lights.

Micronized Limestone – an innovative product from Heidelberg Materials Bulgaria – was used to coat the runway. The product is a certified fine filler for bitumen, which improves the performance of the final product – in particular the flow properties of the asphalt mix, which contributes to better compaction and thus improves water and heat resistance, as well as hardness. At the same time, the use of the product allows decreased consumption of binders.
