Producing cement, reducing waste

Edmonton plant diverts 100 kilotonnes of waste annually

How can cement production help reduce landfill waste? At our Edmonton cement plant, we are taking action to replace up to 50% of fossil fuels with low-carbon alternative fuels sourced from municipal, construction, and demolition waste. This initiative sets new standards for sustainable manufacturing.

With support from Alberta’s Industrial Energy Efficiency and Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage Program, along with a £2.4 million investment from Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA), the Edmonton plant is introducing cutting-edge equipment and infrastructure. By diverting approximately 100 kilotonnes of non-hazardous waste per year from landfills, we will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions while extending landfill lifespans.

The use of pretreated, waste-derived fuels in cement kilns, referred to as co-processing, includes energy recovery and material recycling in the final product. Innovations like these not only reduce carbon emissions but also align with our commitment to circularity and environmental stewardship.
