Art Gallery of Alberta (Canada)
Innovative design meets historic art
The Art Gallery of Alberta is located in a section of Edmonton, Canada, known for its art scene. The gallery houses roughly 6,000 exhibits – including historic and modern paintings, sculptures, installations, and photographs by nationally and internationally known artists.
And, the gallery building itself is a work of art: Architect Randall Stout took inspiration for the undulating form, with glass-panelled walls twisting through a serpentine band of steel, from the North Saskatchewan River and the Aurora Borealis.
The Art Gallery of Alberta was reopened in 2010, after demolition and redesign of the old building. The new gallery building features 7,900 m² of space spread across three floors – nearly twice as much as the old one. The building also contains a restaurant, souvenir shop, and 150-seat theatre.
Heidelberg Materials supplied 2,500 m³ of ready-mixed concrete for the project.
