Partnering for biodiversity protection in Ghana

On 9 and 10 October 2015, the first Pan-African Business and Biodiversity Forum (PABBF) took place in Akosombo, Ghana. Over 200 participants from 41 countries – including business, governments, civil society, academia, development organisations and financial institutions – came to exchange ideas and experiences.

With the theme Investing in Natural Capital for Inclusive Development, the Forum’s aim was to promote increased sustainability within Africa’s development agenda through the mainstreaming of natural capital, and improved cooperation between business and civil society.

Ghacem and the Ghana Wildlife Society cooperate

As one highlight of the event, Ghacem, HeidelbergCement’s subsidiary in Ghana, and the Ghana Wildlife Society, BirdLife International’s network partner, signed a cooperation agreement. It is the first cooperation agreement set up under the HeidelbergCement-BirdLife partnership in Africa.

Ghacem’s Managing Director Morten Gade said: “The new partnership will reinforce both organisations, to better protect biodiversity in Ghana. The Ghana Wildlife Society will support us in carrying out planned quarry rehabilitation, developing biodiversity protection and management measures as well as engaging with the local communities around our quarries.”
